Travelling with a baby.
When we first had Mr Moo, we made a pact that our lives would change as little as we possibly could. Mr J and I love to travel, eat out and explore the world therefore we would do everything in our power to ensure we continue to do these things.
12 months later as I write this blog, our little boy has now visited 12 different countries and I have a lot of information, tips and experiences to share with you. Good and bad.
I think I will start this by saying that travelling with a baby isn’t easy, but it is much easier with a 3 month old than it is with a 12 month old, well in our experience anyway.
Mr Moo’s first trip was to Dubai aged 3 months. Prior to the trip, I watched loads of YouTube videos on what to pack, travel insurance, food, sunscreen, sleepwear, babies flying, how to help their ears on a plane… the list goes on and on.
I watched women have checklists for toys, different types of prams, clothes and suitcases which you could literally put the kitchen sink in, but I can tell you that none of that resonated with me.
My baby was 3 months old; he didn’t need a million toys and I certainly didn’t think it was necessary to take 2 different prams on a plane. So I did my own thing, and let me tell you, it was minimal, we all survived and had a fantastic time.
I started to research what I believed to be necessary and I am about to share my checklist with you:
Milk
Milk bottles x6
Does the hotel room have a kettle so I can sterilise my bottles?
Does the hotel room have a cot?
Book a night flight with a bassinet
Nappies
Little swimmers
Full SPF swimsuit
Kids factor 50 SPF
Sun hats x4
Linen rompers
Vests x14
Sleeping bag
Pram
Sun umbrella for pram
Travel insurance
Calpol
Nose clearer
Water wipes
Blanket
Bot cream
Rattel
Baby Einstein toy
Baby changing bag
Sponge
Baby shampoo
Does the hotel room have a bath?
The above is taken straight from my phone notes and that is exactly what I took to Dubai. I also researched how to make sure Mr Moo’s ears wouldn’t hurt on take off and landing but honestly, I am not too sure if we have full control of that and here is why. On the way to Dubai, Mr Moo was a dream. He fed on the way up and on the way down as recommended. He didn’t cry and he slept the full flight. On the way back, he again was a dream feeding on the way up, he slept the flight but woke up near to landing. I fed him, however, he screamed for around 10 minutes until I could only assume his ears popped and he settled down.
I also noted other babies crying and my ears hurt too. After researching, there is no real reason why some people are affected more than others, but it has to do with pressure in the cabin at the time so we can only do what we can do, so don’t stress it.
I will share the next trip which was a 9 country road trip in a motor home in the next blog…. now that was an experience which I will never ever do again!
